AMSTERDAM AND ITS CHANNELS

Amsterdam: with 100 kilometers of channels and 1500 bridges, is called “the North Venice”.

The channels system is created with a good urban planification. They planed a form where 4 big semicircular channels end in the “Belt of Channels”. Three of them are residential, but the fourth (Singel) is for defense and water management.

The most important channels are: Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht, buided in the “Golden Season” (s. XVII). They are the 3 residential channels of the “Belt of Channels”. And the Singel.

Herengracht (Lords' Channel): The old part has the name of the old governords of the city, and the new part; Gouden Botch (Golden Bend).
Samuel Sarphati, a famous arquitect, has lived there. And Peter the Great, governor of Rusia in the Romanov Dinasty, stayed there during his second visit to Amsterdam.

Prinsengracht (Prince's Channel): Is the longest channel in Ansterdam. Along the channel you can see the Noorderkerk (Northern Church) that is placed in the Noordermarkt, Anne Frank House, one of the most famous buildings in Amsterdam, and the Westerkerk (Western Church), Amsterdam's tallest church. The most of its bridges conect with the center of Amsterdam; so it has an important situation.

Keizersgracht (Emperor's Channel): Is the widest channel in Amsterdam
Some importants lawyers, archaeologies and engineers has lived or stayed there; like John Adams, Heinrich Schliemann or Daniel Fahrenheit. And Peter the Great stayed there during his first visit to Amsterdam.

Singelgracht: it was a moat in the medieval Amsterdam. The fourth channel in the “Belt of Channels”.

Some others channels are:

Zwanenburgwal: a channel and street in the center of Amsterdam and one of the most beautiful streets. Rembrant, famous painter, has lived there.

Brouwersgracht: that sirved for the ships that returned from Asia.

Kloveniersburgwal: its east side became very populated and has big mansions.

Brantasgracht, Lamonggracht, Majanggracht and Seranggracht: the fourth newest channels in Amsterdam, builded in 1995.
