Rotterdam is one of the most famous cities in Holland and has a population of 610.412.
Its port, called Europoort, is the most big in Europe and the second in the world.
It is divided by the river Nieuwe Maas, so we it has 2 parts: Rotterdam South and Rottedam North.

Rotterdam is one of the most famous cities in Holland and has a population of 610.412.
History: In 1260 Rotte was a dam (here the name “Rotterdam”) who lived about fishing, but it transformed to a commerce place, so they created their firsts ports. Rotterdam was a very important city because of his situation at wars and the creation of a wall.
In s. XIX, his port was in danger, but a new design of it created new routes and this saved it. The whole city was renovated with prestigious buildings.
In 1950, after fight days, Rotterdam was bombarded by the Germans, and finally; occupied
After the war, the city started to be renovated with modern buildings. In 1960 it was built the “Euromast” (symbol of postwar), designed by Hugh Maaskant, and in 1970 it increased its height; 185 meters. Then were created new neighborhoods and skyscrapers.

With the Euromast, another famous buildings in Rotterdam are the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen), with an strange and innovative arquitectural model, and built by Piet Blom; they represent a forest; every house represent a tree. You can visit them near “the Market Hall” (Markthal), a big glass made building, very helpful because of its organization; it has the market underneath. Another characteristic that make special the market is that has a beautiful artwork in the walls made by Arno Coenen.
